Kouga Agri, founded by Contessa Juba, is a flourishing small farm in Kruisfontein. Contessa adopted regenerative farming methods and produces organic vegetables for local markets such as The Green Box.
SSK through the Social Employment Fund provided employees to work alongside Contessa to support local food security. Inputs like seedlings, tools, equipment and protective clothing were invested in this amazing project.
Regenerative farming is an agricultural practice that seeks to improve and restore soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem function by using techniques that promote soil health, biodiversity, and ecological resilience. Regenerative farming practices focus on building and maintaining soil health, which is essential for plant growth and nutrient uptake, as well as for reducing the risk of erosion and soil degradation.
Some common regenerative farming practices include reducing tillage, using cover crops, practicing crop rotations, integrating livestock into crop systems, and using natural fertilizers such as compost and manure. These practices can improve soil fertility and water retention, increase biodiversity, and reduce the need for synthetic inputs like fertilizers and pesticides.
Regenerative farming aims to create a sustainable and resilient farming system that benefits both the environment and the farmers. By promoting healthy soil and diverse ecosystems, regenerative farming can increase yields, reduce input costs, and improve farm profitability in the long run.
